Balfour Beatty 84-Inch Waterline

This Project was part of a 17-mile pipeline to convey raw water to East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and Sacramento County from the Sacramento River through Sacramento County to the Folsom South Canal.

Syblon Reid was contracted to construct 1,500 linear feet (lf) of 84-inch diameter cement-mortar lined (CML) steel pipe from the intake pumping plant to the south side of Interstate 5.

The project consisted of:

  • Vertical excavation up to 18-feet deep and 12-feet wide,
  • Installation of 84-inch diameter CML steel pipe sections 40-feet long, weighing 39,000 pound/each,
  • Welded joints inside and outside,
  • Initial backfill with controlled low-strength material (CLSM) – by others,
  • Native backfill to existing grade,
  • Installation of a fiber optic conduit duct bank, and
  • Applying cement-mortar to interior pipe joints by hand.
