Folsom South Canal Utility Bridge

To expand utility access to a new development, a three span bridge was constructed over the Folsom South Canal.

The project scope consisted of driving 90-foot piers adjacent to the canal and five 50 foot steel piles at each abutment, forming and pouring of a flat slab bridge deck with precast/pre-stressed concrete girders, installation of 36-inch diameter welded steel pipe and ductile iron for water transmission, and installation of 22-inch diameter HDPE sewer force main with 28-inch diameter welded steel pipe containment over the canal.

This project was unique and challenging since it had to be completed on an accelerated schedule during the winter. Working with active fall protection requirements on the deck during winter weather was successfully carried out. Driving piles and performing excavations next to the existing and active canal required engineering skill to prevent damage to the canal liner. With limited access to the canal, coordination of project activities to meet critical milestones, involving multiple subcontracts and vendors, was essential.
