San Lorenzo River Pedestrian Bridge

This project consisted of constructing a steel pony truss bridge over the San Lorenzo River to divert pedestrian and bicycle traffic off of nearby Highway 101.

The bridge is comprised of a three-span prefabricated steel structure supported on cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) concrete pilings 84 inches in diameter and drilled to a maximum depth of 140 foot deep.

The project involved several access and environmental challenges, since a majority of the construction activities took place in and near flowing water. These included very limited access into the construction site with large equipment, including a crane and drill rig in excess of 200 tons; as well as difficult terrain on which to operate such equipment. Environmental challenges involved the handling of 600 cubic yards of very wet drill spoils in close proximity to the river.
