April
2, 2003, Folsom, CA - Today, the Putah Creek Undercrossing non-motor
vehicle tunnel and bicycle trail was officially opened, which marked
an important day for UC Davis campus officials.
For
over twelve years UC DAvis campus officials had been working diligently
with The City of Davis to approve a non-motorized vehicle route
from the Southern portion of the UC Davis Campus.
Today,
the new undercrossing forms a tunnel under the Union Pacific Railroad
tracks located at the eastern end of the UC Davis campus by the
Davis Commons shopping center. The path extends past the UCD campus
and apartment complexes, including Allegre, Sorrento and Tanglewood.
Until
the undercrossing tunnel structure was completed, pedestrians traveling
from the southern side of UC Davis could not access the campus without
encountering heavy vehicle traffic on the Richards Boulevard overcrossing.
To complete
this much needed project, the City of Davis chose Syblon Reid, General
Engineering Contractors. Syblon Reid took extensive safety measures
to devise a construction plan that would keep the existing railroad
intact while constructing the underpass for non-vehicle travelers.
The scope of
this project included constructing a pre-cast post tensioned reinforced
concrete box culvert for the undercrossing, installing illumated
lighting throughout the access area and pouring concrete bike trail
pathways.
This project
required completion over a 3-stage emergency shut-down of the main
east coast to west coast rail link for Union Pacific Railroad.
Syblon
Reid, General Engineering Contractors, formed in 1955 by John Reid
and Ray Syblon, has emphasized quality work at competitive prices
