To expand utility access to a new development
a three span bridge was constructed over the Folsom South Canal. Project
scope consisted of driving 90' piers adjacent to the canal and 5-50; steel
piles at each abutment, forming and pouring of a flat slab bridge deck
with precast/prestressed concrete girders, installation of 36" welded
steel pipe and ductile iron for water transmission, and installation of
22" HDPE sewer force main with 28" welded steel pipe containment
over the canal.
What was unique and challenging about this
project was it was done on an accelerated schedule during the winter.
Working with active fall protection requirements on the deck during winter
weather was successfully carried out. Driving piles and performing excavations
next to the existing and active canal required engineering skill to prevent
damage to the canal liner. With limited access to the canal itself, coordination
of project activities to meet critical project milestones involving multiple
subcontracts and vendors was essential.
